Compressed Fibre Cement structural floor substrate.
Product Details
Hardie™ Panel is a compressed fibre cement (CFC) sheet for ceramic tile finishes over timber or lightweight steel joists. Used as substrate for tiled balconies and tiled internal wet-area floors, HardiePanel is a durable alternative to particle board and plywood and is resistant to damage from moisture. Strong and resilient, Hardie Panel can also be used as formwork in a range of industrial and commercial applications such as bridges and roadworks. Deemed non-combustible in accordance with the provisions of the Building Code of Australia, it can also be used for floors in bushfire prone areas.
Best for
- Structural substrates for tiled balconies
- Wet-area flooring under tile finishes
- Projects replacing particleboard or plywood in moisture-prone floor zones
- Situations where a lighter alternative to concrete is beneficial
- Industrial and commercial formwork uses (application dependent)
- Builds needing a durable, impact-tolerant compressed sheet
Selecting the best type
Choose thickness by structural requirement
- Choose thinner options for designs with lower thickness needs and shorter spans.
- Choose thicker options when higher stiffness or heavier duty performance is specified.
- Match selection to engineering and manufacturer requirements. Choose a sheet size to reduce joints
- Select longer sheets where possible to reduce end joints and speed installation.
If you’re specifying a structural fibre cement sheet under tiles, this compressed sheet is built for jobs where stiffness, impact tolerance, and moisture resistance matter. It’s commonly chosen for tiled balconies and internal wet-area floors because it stays stable when exposed to humidity changes that can damage timber-based substrates. That stability helps reduce the risk of movement telegraphing through to grout lines and tile finishes when the floor is detailed and installed correctly.
For best results, treat it as part of a complete floor build-up, not a standalone fix. Set-out and support are critical: confirm joist spacing and span requirements, select the correct thickness to suit the structural design, and aim to minimise joints by choosing longer sheet lengths where practical. All cut edges and penetrations should be handled carefully, and fixings should follow the current manufacturer pattern so the sheet is properly restrained before waterproofing and tiling proceed.
